How can I have a personal relationship with Jesus?
Question 7104
This is perhaps the most important question anyone can ask. Christianity is not primarily about following a set of rules or joining an institution. It is about knowing a person, Jesus Christ, and being known by Him. The good news is that a personal relationship with Jesus is available to everyone who wants it. Here is how it works.
Understanding the Problem
Before we can understand how to have a relationship with Jesus, we need to understand why we do not have one naturally. The Bible is clear that every human being is separated from God by sin. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin is not just doing bad things; it is falling short of God’s perfect standard, which none of us can meet.
This sin creates a barrier between us and God. “Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God” (Isaiah 59:2). We were made for relationship with God, but our sin has broken that relationship. We are spiritually dead, unable to approach a holy God on our own merit.
No amount of good works, religious observance, or moral effort can bridge this gap. “For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight” (Romans 3:20). We cannot save ourselves. We cannot earn God’s favour. If we are to have a relationship with God, He must make the first move.
What God Has Done
This is exactly what God did when He sent His Son. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Jesus came to do what we could not do for ourselves. He lived a perfect life, fulfilling God’s law completely. Then He died on the cross, taking the punishment that our sins deserved.
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). He did not wait for us to clean ourselves up. He came while we were still His enemies and died for us. On the cross, Jesus bore the wrath of God against sin so that we could be forgiven and reconciled to God.
Three days later, He rose from the dead, proving that His sacrifice was accepted and that death had been defeated. “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins” (1 Corinthians 15:17). But Christ has been raised, and that changes everything.
How You Receive It
The relationship with Jesus that God offers is received by faith. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is a gift, freely given, that we receive by trusting in Jesus.
What does it mean to believe in Jesus? It means trusting Him as your Saviour and Lord. It means admitting that you are a sinner who cannot save yourself. It means believing that Jesus died for your sins and rose again. It means committing your life to Him, saying, “Lord Jesus, I am Yours.”
The Bible’s invitation is simple: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). This is not about saying magic words; it is about genuine trust in a real person.
If you have never done this, you can do it right now. There is no special formula, but you might pray something like this: “Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my sin and put my trust in You as my Saviour and Lord. Please forgive me and come into my life. Amen.”
If you pray that prayer sincerely, you can know that you are forgiven and have eternal life. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life” (John 3:36). Not “might have” or “will have one day” but has, present tense, right now.
The Relationship Grows
Coming to faith in Jesus is the beginning of a relationship, not the end. Just as any relationship grows through communication and shared experience, so our relationship with Jesus grows through prayer and obedience.
Prayer is simply talking to God. You can tell Him anything. He already knows it anyway, but He wants to hear from you. “Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). You can bring Him your worries, your thanks, your questions, your struggles. He is always listening.
Reading the Bible is how God speaks to us. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). As you read the Bible, the Holy Spirit uses it to teach you, challenge you, comfort you, and shape you. Start with one of the Gospels, perhaps John or Mark, and read a little each day.
Gathering with other Christians is also essential. “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together” (Hebrews 10:24-25). Find a church that teaches the Bible and loves Jesus. You need other believers, and they need you.
As you pray, read Scripture, and fellowship with other Christians, you will find your relationship with Jesus deepening. You will begin to recognise His voice, understand His ways, and experience His presence in your daily life. You will not become perfect overnight, but you will be changed. “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
What Makes This Relationship Possible
The reason we can have a personal relationship with Jesus is that the Holy Spirit comes to live inside every believer. “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16). When you put your faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in your heart. He is the one who makes this relationship real and personal.
Jesus promised this before He ascended: “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth” (John 14:16-17). The Holy Spirit is with you always. He teaches you, comforts you, convicts you of sin, and empowers you to live for God. He is the guarantee of our inheritance (Ephesians 1:14), the seal that marks us as belonging to God.
This is not some mystical, impersonal force. This is God Himself dwelling within you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you” (John 14:18). Jesus keeps His promise. He comes to us through His Spirit.
Conclusion
A personal relationship with Jesus is the greatest gift anyone can receive. It begins when you admit your need, trust in what Jesus has done for you, and commit your life to Him. It grows as you pray, read the Bible, and walk with other believers. And it is made possible by the Holy Spirit, who comes to dwell within you the moment you believe. If you have not yet begun this relationship, there is no better time than now. Jesus is waiting. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). Open the door.
“And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” John 17:3
