Can Satan perform miracles?

Can Satan perform miracles? The short answer is that he can produce genuine signs and wonders, that Scripture says so plainly, and that this is one of the reasons we are told to test everything rather than to be impressed by displays of power. A miracle is not by itself proof that God is behind something.

That will unsettle some readers, and it should. A great deal of popular Christianity works on the assumption that the supernatural is automatically divine. The Bible never assumes that. It tells us to look at the message and the fruit before we look at the marvel.

What Scripture says when it asks whether Satan can perform miracles

The clearest text is 2 Thessalonians 2, where Paul says the coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders. The words for signs and wonders there, semeion and teras, are the same words used of the works of Jesus and the apostles. The difference is not in the vocabulary but in the source and the purpose.

Revelation says the same about the second beast, who performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven in front of people. Whatever else that means, it does not describe conjuring tricks. The New Testament expects the counterfeit to be convincing, which is precisely why it is dangerous.

So the question is not whether Satan can perform miracles but what he does with them. Every recorded instance has the same aim, which is to secure belief in a lie. The power is real. The message it authenticates is not.

The magicians of Egypt

When Aaron’s staff became a serpent, the magicians of Egypt did the same by their secret arts. They matched the first plague and the second. Then at the plague of gnats they failed, and said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” Whatever their power was, it had a ceiling and they knew it when they hit it.

I take that account seriously as a pattern. The counterfeit can imitate for a while, it can harden a heart that has already decided, and then it runs out. Nothing in the narrative suggests the magicians were frauds, and nothing suggests they were a match for God either.

Notice also what the imitation achieved. It did not save anybody or heal anybody. It gave Pharaoh a reason to carry on as he was. When Satan does perform miracles, the fruit is almost always confirmation for someone who wants an excuse.

Real power, borrowed and limited

Angels are creatures of considerable power, and fallen angels did not lose their abilities when they lost their standing. That is enough to account for a great deal. A being who can affect weather, health, animals and the human mind can do things that look miraculous to us without ever exceeding creaturely capacity.

What he cannot do is create. Nothing in Scripture shows Satan making something from nothing, giving life, or raising the dead. He works with what already exists, rearranging and manipulating rather than originating. When he does perform miracles they are displays of derived power, not divine power.

And he does nothing without permission. The book of Job is the anchor here. The limits are stated before the events begin, and they hold. If you find the thought of a devil who can perform miracles frightening, put it alongside the thought of a devil who has to ask.

Why the counterfeit exists

Deuteronomy 13 is the passage that settles the method for me. If a prophet arises and gives a sign, and the sign comes to pass, and then he says let us go after other gods, you shall not listen. The sign was accurate. The message was false. The test is the message, always.

Jesus said the same in different words. False christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. He did not say the signs would be fake. He said they would be persuasive, which is a far more sobering thing to be told.

This is why I am uneasy with ministries built on the spectacular. It is not that God has stopped working. It is that a crowd gathered by wonders is a crowd that can be moved by wonders, and the coming deception described in Revelation makes exactly that appeal at the end.

How to tell the difference

Ask what is being taught. If the message diminishes Jesus, adds to the gospel, or shifts attention onto a personality, it does not matter what happened on the platform. Paul told the Galatians that even an angel from heaven preaching another gospel should be rejected, and the disguise of an angel of light is one of his working assumptions elsewhere.

Ask what it produces. Jesus tied discernment to fruit rather than to power, and He said that many would say to Him on that day that they had prophesied and cast out demons in His name, and He would say He never knew them. Works alone prove nothing about the worker.

Ask who benefits. Genuine works of God in Scripture tend to be unrepeatable, unmanaged, and inconvenient for the person through whom they come. Where money, control or reputation is being gathered, I would want a great deal of evidence before I called it the finger of God.

Keeping this in proportion

None of this should leave you nervous. The fact that Satan can perform miracles does not put him anywhere near God’s level. A creature copying a signature is not the author. The counterfeit exists because the genuine article exists, and forgeries are always parasitic on the real thing.

Nor should it make you cynical about everything unusual. I am not a cessationist and I have no interest in explaining away what God does. The instruction is to test, not to dismiss. Test the spirits, hold fast what is good, and be willing to say I am not sure.

Most of all, remember where the decisive miracle happened. The resurrection was not a demonstration of power to impress a crowd. It was public, verifiable, witnessed, and it has never been imitated. Whatever else the enemy can do, he has never raised anyone from the dead.

The pattern in the last days

The New Testament expects counterfeit power to intensify rather than fade. Paul tells the Thessalonians that the lawless one will come with all power and false signs and wonders, and with wicked deception for those who are perishing because they refused to love the truth. Revelation describes a second beast who works great signs and deceives those who dwell on the earth. If Satan can perform miracles now, the closing chapters of the age will see him do so on a scale designed to secure worship.

Notice the connection Paul draws between deception and the refusal to love truth. The signs do not create the unbelief, they confirm it. People are not swept away against their better judgement, they are given what they have already chosen. That is a solemn thought and it puts the emphasis exactly where Scripture puts it, on our relationship with the truth rather than on our resistance to spectacle.

Which is why I keep coming back to the same test. Ask what is being taught before you ask what has happened. A ministry where the power grows and the doctrine thins is a ministry heading somewhere dangerous. When the question of whether Satan can perform miracles becomes practical rather than theoretical, the people who will stand are the ones who knew their Bibles beforehand.

Signs were never the foundation

It is worth remembering how little weight Jesus put on signs as a means of producing faith. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, He said, and no sign will be given except the sign of Jonah. He rebuked the crowds who followed Him because they ate the loaves and were filled. When people demanded a demonstration, He usually declined, which is not the behaviour of someone building a following on spectacle.

So the possibility that Satan can perform miracles ought not to unsettle a Christian whose faith was never built on wonders in the first place. If your confidence rests on the resurrection, on the testimony of Scripture, and on the character of God as He has revealed Himself, then a counterfeit can dazzle without moving you. The people who are shaken when something strange happens are usually the people who were looking for something strange to happen.

So, now what?

If you are drawn to a ministry because of what happens rather than what is said, slow down and listen to the teaching for a month with your Bible open. That single habit would have saved a good many people I have known a great deal of grief.

And do not let this make you suspicious of your own church prayer meeting. God still answers, still heals, still works. The point is not to distrust the supernatural but to weigh it. What are you actually building your confidence on, the wonder or the word?
